Which resorts depend on US-50

US-50 over Echo Summit is the road to Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe, and to South Lake Tahoe lodging generally. From South Lake, Kirkwood is another 33 miles on a third highway, SR-88.

Why US-50 is the harder road

Most people assume the opposite, so here is the reasoning.

  • It is higher. Echo Summit is around 7,380 feet, roughly 300 feet above the I-80 crossing at Donner.
  • It is two lanes over the top. I-80 is a divided interstate the whole way, so one spun-out car closes US-50 in a way it rarely closes I-80.
  • It reportedly gets fewer snow-removal resources and stays closed longer after storms. That comes from road-condition reporting, not a Caltrans statement.
  • It has closures I-80 doesn't. Avalanche control and rockslides at Echo Summit close it independent of any storm, and Caltrans has issued multi-day rockslide closure releases there.

Where the chain control checkpoints are

Direction Checkpoints
Eastbound (Sacramento to South Lake) Placerville (Mile 44), Kyburz (Mile 68)
Westbound (heading home) Echo Summit (Mile 86), Meyers (Mile 92)

Have chains in the car before Placerville. US-50 mileposts start at its junction with I-80 in West Sacramento, so they are not comparable with I-80's. Checkpoint locations come from road-condition reporting, so confirm on QuickMap the morning you travel. Installers typically charge $30 to $50.

What R1, R2 and R3 mean

R2 is the common one: chains on passenger cars unless you have all-wheel or four-wheel drive with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Exempt or not, you must carry chains in a control area. See our chain control guide and which chains to buy.

When to leave

  • Check the night before and again before you go.
  • Don't plan on switching to I-80 mid-drive. Big storms hit both corridors at once.
  • Budget extra time coming home. Westbound controls at Meyers and Echo Summit catch Sunday traffic.

How many chain control points Caltrans reports on US-50

Caltrans publishes 7 chain control reporting points on US-50 above 4,900 feet, all of them in El Dorado County, between 4,957 and 7,401 feet.

Compare that with I-80, which has 23 above 4,500 feet. US-50 is monitored at roughly a third the density while topping out higher, 7,401 feet against I-80's 7,247. That is the concrete version of the usual advice that US-50 is the harder road. It is not that the pavement is worse. It is that there is more distance between the places where anyone is reporting what the pavement is doing, so a bad stretch can sit between two reporting points and not show up anywhere until you are in it.
