🏀 California Ski Weekend Trip Tips

Practical advice from people who actually drive to these mountains every winter.

❄️
Check 48h new snow, not just base depth
A 100" base with zero new snow last week skis very differently than a 60" base with 12" on Thursday. Always look at the 48-hour new snow number before committing — that's what determines how good it actually feels underfoot.
🌞
Leave Friday night if you can
Saturday morning traffic on I-80, US-395, and CA-18 is brutal from late December through March. Leaving Friday after 8pm cuts your drive time significantly and gets you first tracks Saturday morning when the grooming is fresh.
⛽️
Always carry chains, even with AWD
Caltrans can require chains or snow tires on any mountain road regardless of your vehicle. A $50 set of chains avoids turning a great ski weekend into a 3-hour detour. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave — it's free and accurate.
🎉
Buy lift tickets online in advance
Window prices at most California resorts run $180–$250 per day. Buying online 2+ days ahead at Mammoth, Palisades, Heavenly, and Northstar typically saves $40–80 per ticket. Midday and afternoon-only tickets are even cheaper at some resorts.
🕐
Hit the mountain early, head out by 2pm
Weekend crowds at California's top resorts peak between 10am–2pm. First chair typically opens at 8–8:30am and the runs are nearly empty. Leaving by 2pm also avoids the worst of the afternoon exodus traffic down the mountain.
Spring corn snow is underrated
In California's sunny spring conditions (March–May), groomed hard pack in the morning turns to soft corn snow by early afternoon. On these days, Mammoth and June Mountain are exceptional — warm sun, soft turns, and often t-shirt skiing by noon.

Weekend Ski Trip California — FAQs

What is the best California ski resort for a weekend trip from Los Angeles?
For a weekend trip from Los Angeles, Big Bear Mountain Resort and Mountain High are the closest options at 2–2.5 hours, making them ideal for a Saturday day trip. For a proper overnight ski weekend with better snow and more terrain, Mammoth Mountain is the gold standard from LA — about 5 hours but with California's longest season, biggest vertical, and most reliable snowpack. Mt. Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains is an underrated 90-minute option when conditions are good.
What is the best California ski resort for a weekend trip from San Francisco?
From San Francisco and the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe resorts are the obvious choice at 3–4 hours via I-80 or US-50. Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl are right on I-80 making them the easiest to reach. Northstar and Heavenly are excellent for families. For the best snow and fewer crowds, Kirkwood is a favorite among Bay Area locals. Bear Valley in the Central Sierra at about 3 hours is also an excellent and much less crowded alternative on strong snow years.
How do I know if California ski conditions are good this weekend?
Three numbers to check before your weekend ski trip: base depth (50"+ at the summit is solid), new snow in the last 48 hours (even 4–6" makes a significant difference to how conditions ski), and lifts open percentage (80%+ means the mountain is fully running). Our California Ski Conditions page tracks all 20 major CA ski resorts daily. The city picker on this page also ranks this weekend's best options from your starting city factoring in all three metrics plus drive time.
When is the best time of year for a California ski weekend?
January through March is the sweet spot for California skiing. The snowpack is deepest, storms are most frequent, and all resorts run their full lift operations. February is statistically the best month for powder days. March is also excellent and typically less crowded than peak holiday periods. April and May offer spring skiing at Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain with warm sun and soft corn snow. Avoid Presidents Day, MLK, and Christmas/New Year's weekends if crowds are a concern — those are the busiest days of the year at California ski resorts.
Which California ski resort has the most fresh snow right now?
The snow snapshot on this page shows current base depths and 48-hour new snow totals for all California ski resorts ranked from deepest to shallowest. In general, Northern Sierra resorts like Palisades Tahoe, Kirkwood, and Sugar Bowl receive the most consistent snowfall. Mammoth Mountain in the Eastern Sierra has the highest base elevation which preserves the snowpack better during warm spells. For up-to-the-day numbers, see our full California Ski Conditions tracker.
What should I pack for a California ski weekend?
For a California ski weekend: tire chains (required in many conditions regardless of AWD), a base layer, mid layer, and waterproof ski jacket and pants, goggles with at least two lens options (sunny and overcast), sunscreen (UV is intense at elevation), snacks for the car and mountain, and cash for parking at resorts that don't take cards at the gate. Buy lift tickets in advance online to save $40–80 per day. If you're going to Mammoth, check the US-395 road conditions and carry an extra layer — the Eastern Sierra can be significantly colder and windier than Tahoe.
