Highway 88 to Kirkwood: Road Conditions and Closures

Compiled October 2026 from SnoCal's Kirkwood research (Caltrans District 10 Avalanche Control Program and Kirkwood Mountain Resort). Conditions change by the hour, so check the live sources below before you drive.

Why Highway 88 is its own problem

Kirkwood is not a South Lake resort, whatever the maps imply. It sits on SR-88 between Carson Pass and Carson Spur, which Caltrans describes as one of North America's most active avalanche zones above a highway. Caltrans maintains 15 GazEx avalanche exploders above Carson Spur and nine above Red Lake, runs control work from a station at Caples Lake, and handles 75 to 100 avalanche control assignments per season.

Control work means closures, sometimes for hours. You can be cut off from the Central Valley side while the South Lake approach is clear, or the reverse. The Carson Spur between Silver Lake and Kirkwood has been closed with no estimated reopening while Carson Pass itself stayed open.

The GPS trap: the Mormon Emigrant Trail is closed in winter, and routing apps regularly offer it as the fastest way to Kirkwood. The resort explicitly warns visitors to pick another route.

The two ways in

From Route Rough time
Bay Area / Central Valley SR-88 east through Jackson and Pioneer, over Carson Spur About 3 hours from the Bay Area
South Lake Tahoe South through Meyers, then SR-88 west over Carson Pass 33 miles
Reno South to SR-88, then west over Carson Pass About 1.5 hours

Before you commit to Highway 88

  • Fill the tank and buy food first. There is no supermarket within an hour: Jackson or Pine Grove from the valley side, Safeway in South Lake from the Tahoe side. Cook's Station in Pioneer is the traditional last coffee stop.
  • Carry chains whatever you drive. See our chain control guide and which chains to buy.
  • The risk is the drive home. Getting there in the morning is rarely the problem. Getting out when control work closes the pass at 2pm is.
  • Kirkwood is cashless, so don't count on cash for parking or food.
