South Lake Tahoe is the best all-around base for Tahoe skiing -- it offers the most hotels and VRBO options, is 10-15 minutes from Heavenly, Kirkwood, and Sierra-at-Tahoe, and has dining and nightlife within walking distance. Truckee and Tahoe City on the North Shore are better if you are primarily skiing Palisades Tahoe, Northstar, or Homewood. For a group cabin trip, the West Shore and Donner Summit areas have some of the most scenic and affordable vacation rentals in the region.

For groups, VRBO cabins and condos in Mammoth Lakes offer excellent value, especially for stays of 3 or more nights. June Mountain is only 20 minutes away and shares the Mammoth lodging pool, making it a great add-on day trip without moving accommodation.

Yes -- Mountain High, Mt. Baldy, and Snow Valley are all designed for LA-area day trips and most visitors do not stay overnight. Big Bear Mountain Resort and Snow Valley are the exception if you want a full weekend: Big Bear Lake village has a solid hotel and VRBO cabin market within easy walking or driving distance of both resorts. Staying in Big Bear Lake is especially worthwhile for families, as it removes the stress of the long I-10 / Hwy 18 drive both ways in one day.

For holiday weekends (Christmas, MLK, Presidents Day) at Tahoe or Mammoth, book 3-4 months in advance -- quality VRBO cabins and hotel rooms at good prices disappear quickly.
