Where to Stay at Northstar
Last verified 26 August 2026 against Northstar California, Park Northstar, Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit and Caltrans.
Two things about Northstar that booking sites won’t tell you. First, there is a free parking lot, every day, no reservation, with a free shuttle to the Village that runs until 10pm on weekends — while people a quarter mile away pay $50. Second, a lot of lodging advertised as “Northstar” is not walkable to anything; it’s scattered along Northstar Drive and depends entirely on a shuttle.
Northstar Village is the only genuinely walk-to-gondola option, and even then you ride a gondola before you reach real skiing. Downtown Truckee is six miles north, has far better food, costs less, and has an Amtrak station. Kings Beach and the North Shore are cheaper again with free on-demand transit. Incline Village is the weak link — no on-demand transit at all, so plan on driving. And park at Castle Peak, which is free every single day.
How you actually get from the Village to snow
Northstar has an unusual layout worth understanding before you book. The Village sits at the bottom, and the Big Springs Gondola — which opens at 8:30am — carries you up to where the skiing starts. You are riding a lift before you reach the mountain proper.
A second gondola, the Highlands Gondola, links the Village to the mid-mountain Ritz-Carlton, and notably keeps running into the evening after the mountain closes — useful if you want dinner up there.
Northstar’s terrain skews strongly intermediate: 60% of trails across 3,170 acres, 2,280 feet of vertical, 19 lifts and seven terrain parks. Excellent for families and park riders. Advanced skiers sometimes find it limiting — worth knowing before you commit a week to it.
Where should you park at Northstar?
This is where most of the money is won or lost. Last season the structure was:

Three levers there, in order of value. Castle Peak is free every day and the weekend shuttle runs until 10pm, so you can ski, shower, eat in the Village and still ride back. Four people in one car parks free in Village View on weekends. And after 11:30am, or after 3pm, the fees largely evaporate — a deliberately late start is cheaper.
Can you ski Northstar without a car?
Partly, and it depends entirely on where you sleep.
The TART Highway 267 route runs Crystal Bay to Truckee with a stop at Northstar Village, and it’s free to everyone. Free on-demand TART Connect covers Truckee from 6:30am to midnight, plus Tahoe City and Kings Beach — but at Northstar it runs evenings only, roughly 6 to 11pm, and it does not serve Incline Village at all.
So: Truckee, Kings Beach and Tahoe City are workable car-free. Incline Village is not.
Area by area
Northstar Village
A pedestrian plaza with a skating rink, shops and restaurants, and the only lodging that genuinely walks to the Big Springs Gondola. Best for families and groups with non-skiers, and for anyone who wants to park once and forget the car. Highest rates on this list.
Mid-mountain — the Ritz-Carlton
Genuinely mid-mountain, sitting on the Big Easy run with ski-in/ski-out access and ski valet, reached from the Village by the Highlands Gondola. The most convenient skiing of any option here, at the price you’d expect.
Off Northstar Drive
Quieter neighbourhoods scattered along the approach road, served by the resort shuttle. This is where the misunderstanding happens: it’s marketed as Northstar, and it is, but it is not walkable to the Village or the gondola. If you book here, check exactly what shuttle serves the address and what hours it runs before you assume you can leave the car.
Downtown Truckee
Six miles north on SR-267, and the best-value choice on this page. A real historic downtown with genuinely good restaurants and bars rather than resort dining, lower rates, and free TART Connect on demand from 6:30am to midnight.
The standout: Truckee has an Amtrak station at 10065 Donner Pass Road, with the California Zephyr calling daily in each direction, plus Amtrak Thruway coaches and TART connections. Combined with free transit, a genuinely car-free Northstar trip is possible from Truckee — which almost nobody realises.
Kings Beach and the North Shore
On the lake, about 13 miles and 25 minutes from Northstar, generally the cheapest of the options with real character. Served by the free TART Highway 267 route and by TART Connect. Good if you want lake access and lower rates and don’t mind a short drive over Brockway Summit.
Incline Village, Nevada
Attractive, lakeside, and on the Nevada side. Be clear-eyed about one thing: TART Connect does not serve Incline Village. Whatever the map suggests, you will be driving every day, over Brockway Summit, in whatever the weather is doing. Book it for the setting, not for convenience.
Getting there
Northstar publishes: San Francisco 195 miles / about 3.5 hours, Sacramento 109 miles / about 2 hours, Reno 37 miles / about 45 minutes. The route is I-80 to Truckee, then SR-267 south 5.5 miles to Northstar Drive.

Is there free parking at Northstar?
Yes. The Castle Peak lots at 200 Northstar Drive are free every day with no reservation, and a free shuttle runs to the Village until 10pm Saturday and Sunday and 6pm on weekdays. Village View is also free on weekdays and free for cars carrying four or more people on weekends.
Do you need a parking reservation at Northstar?
On weekends and peak days, yes for Village View and the Preferred lots, booked at parknorthstar.com. Castle Peak never requires one. Preferred lots also require you to be parked by 1pm, and are free after 3pm daily. These are 2025-26 terms; 2026-27 is not published yet.
Should you stay in Northstar Village or Truckee?
Northstar Village if walking to the gondola matters most. Truckee for better restaurants, lower rates, free on-demand transit from 6:30am to midnight, and an Amtrak station. Truckee is six miles north on SR-267.
Can you ski Northstar without a car?
