Which resorts depend on US-50
US-50 over Echo Summit is the road to Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe, and to South Lake Tahoe lodging generally. From South Lake, Kirkwood is another 33 miles on a third highway, SR-88.
Why US-50 is the harder road
Most people assume the opposite, so here is the reasoning.
- It is higher. Echo Summit is around 7,380 feet, roughly 300 feet above the I-80 crossing at Donner.
- It is two lanes over the top. I-80 is a divided interstate the whole way, so one spun-out car closes US-50 in a way it rarely closes I-80.
- It reportedly gets fewer snow-removal resources and stays closed longer after storms. That comes from road-condition reporting, not a Caltrans statement.
- It has closures I-80 doesn't. Avalanche control and rockslides at Echo Summit close it independent of any storm, and Caltrans has issued multi-day rockslide closure releases there.
Where the chain control checkpoints are
| Direction | Checkpoints |
|---|---|
| Eastbound (Sacramento to South Lake) | Placerville (Mile 44), Kyburz (Mile 68) |
| Westbound (heading home) | Echo Summit (Mile 86), Meyers (Mile 92) |
Have chains in the car before Placerville. US-50 mileposts start at its junction with I-80 in West Sacramento, so they are not comparable with I-80's. Checkpoint locations come from road-condition reporting, so confirm on QuickMap the morning you travel. Installers typically charge $30 to $50.
What R1, R2 and R3 mean
R2 is the common one: chains on passenger cars unless you have all-wheel or four-wheel drive with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Exempt or not, you must carry chains in a control area. See our chain control guide and which chains to buy.
When to leave
- Check the night before and again before you go.
- Don't plan on switching to I-80 mid-drive. Big storms hit both corridors at once.
- Budget extra time coming home. Westbound controls at Meyers and Echo Summit catch Sunday traffic.
