California Ski Resort Matcher

Twenty-eight California ski areas, scored against what you actually need. Every question defaults to doesn't matter, so you always get a ranked list rather than an empty one — and every result shows which of your criteria it missed, and why.

Last verified 18 October 2026 against operator published mountain statistics for the 2026-27 season.

Where are you driving from

We group by highway corridor, not drive time. Almost no California operator publishes a drive time, and the few that do contradict each other — so we will not invent minutes.

How this is built

Figures are the operator's own. Vertical drop and skiable acreage come from each resort's published numbers, re-verified for 2026–27. Where an operator publishes no figure we leave it blank rather than borrowing an aggregator's — which is why China Peak acreage, Tahoe Donner elevations, and Coppervale, Badger Pass and Alta Sierra acreage are blank here.

Nothing is ranked on lift count. Lift totals are shown for reference only. Operators count four different ways — Mountain High includes surface carpets in its total, Big Bear counts chairs only, and several resorts publish a bare integer with no breakdown. Ranking on that number would be comparing things that are not the same.

Ability ratings use resort-published terrain percentages where they exist, plus our own beginner-access research. The specific warnings — summit-only green terrain, beginner pods with no beginner route down, carpets reserved for lesson bookings — are things we confirmed directly, and they are the reason a well-reviewed resort can score badly here for a first-timer.

Questions this tool answers

Is Palisades Tahoe good for beginners?

No. The green terrain at Palisades Tahoe sits at High Camp, on the summit, and there is no green route back down, so a first timer has to ride the tram back down at the end of the run. Alpine Meadows, which shares the same pass and is linked by gondola, has exactly two green trails and both are bunny hills at the base.

Which California ski resorts have on site childcare?

Four of the twenty eight. Heavenly Mountain Resort takes children from 6 weeks to 6 years and is the only one in the state that accepts infants. Northstar California takes ages 2 to 5, Mammoth Mountain takes ages 2 to 6, and Sierra-at-Tahoe takes 18 months to 3 years. No other California ski area runs on site childcare.

Can a first timer use the beginner carpets at Big Bear?

No. Big Bear Mountain Resort reserves every beginner moving carpet at Snow Summit, Bear Mountain and Snow Valley for lesson bookings, so a first timer who arrives without a lesson cannot use them. Budget for the lesson, or pick a different hill.

Is June Mountain good for first timers?

No, despite the kids pricing. The beginner pods J2 and J3 at June Mountain sit mid mountain and there is no beginner route down from them, so a true first timer ends up stranded above their ability. June Mountain does let kids 12 and under ski free all season with no blackout dates, which makes it strong value once a child can link turns.

Is Kirkwood a family resort?

Not by its own numbers. Kirkwood Mountain Resort appears in family roundups, but the resort publishes a terrain split of 12 percent beginner, 30 percent intermediate, 38 percent advanced and 20 percent expert. That puts 58 percent of the mountain at advanced or expert, including a chute pitched at 47 degrees. It is one of the most serious mountains in California.

Does Northstar have expert terrain?

Northstar California has no double black runs at all. Its published split is 13 percent beginner, 60 percent intermediate and 27 percent advanced. It is an excellent intermediate and family mountain that is marketed as a premium destination, but a strong skier will run out of terrain.

What is the cheapest way to try skiing in California?

Donner Ski Ranch sells a carpet only all day ticket for 30 dollars at any age, available at the ticket window only. That is the least expensive way to find out whether someone enjoys skiing before committing to a full lift ticket, a rental package and a lesson.

Which California resorts are on the Ikon Pass?

Eight. Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain, Sierra-at-Tahoe, and the three Big Bear Mountain Resort areas, which are Snow Summit, Bear Mountain and Snow Valley.

Which California resorts are on the Epic Pass?

Three. Heavenly Mountain Resort on the US-50 corridor, Kirkwood Mountain Resort on SR-88, and Northstar California off I-80.

Why does this tool not show drive times?

Because almost no California operator publishes one. Of 112 origin and resort pairs we checked, only 3 had an operator published drive time, and two of those contradict each other. Mountain High claims 90 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and 75 minutes from Orange County, which is farther away. Rather than invent numbers, this tool groups resorts by the highway corridor you would actually drive, which is I-80, US-50, SR-88, US-395 and nine others.

Why are resorts not ranked by lift count?

Because operators do not count lifts the same way. Mountain High includes surface carpets in its total of 14. Big Bear Mountain Resort counts chairs only. Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar publish a single number with no breakdown, and the published totals at Palisades Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain do not reconcile with their own listed breakdowns. Ranking on that number would compare things that are not the same.
