About these numbers: most California resorts use dynamic pricing, so the same lift ticket can cost very different amounts depending on the date and how far ahead you buy. The low end of each range assumes buying online in advance for a non-peak day; the high end is a peak or holiday walk-up price. Holiday lodging can run 2 to 3 times a normal weekend. Prices are for adults; kids are usually cheaper. Always confirm on the resort's own site before you buy.
How to make a ski trip cheaper
- Buy lift tickets online, early. Advance online prices at big resorts can be well under half the peak window price.
- Ski midweek if you can. Weekday tickets and lodging are cheaper almost everywhere.
- Rent in town. Shops in Truckee, South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes typically undercut resort-base rentals, and many discount multi-day rentals.
- Carpool. Several resorts make parking free for cars with four or more people.
- Skiing more than a few days a season? A pass may beat day tickets. Run the numbers on our pass break-even calculator.
