I-80 Chain Control and Road Conditions to Tahoe
Compiled October 2026 from SnoCal's Tahoe corridor research (Caltrans and road-condition reporting). Conditions change by the hour, so check the live sources below before you drive.
Check I-80 right now: Caltrans QuickMap for the live map and cameras, Caltrans Road Information (enter 80) for current restrictions in plain text, or call 1-800-427-7623, which works when you have signal but no data, which is most of the drive over Donner.
Which resorts depend on I-80
I-80 over Donner Summit is the main Tahoe corridor. Ten of Tahoe's thirteen lift-served ski areas are reached over it: Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Soda Springs, Donner Ski Ranch, Tahoe Donner, Palisades Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Homewood and Granlibakken. It is also the way most Bay Area skiers reach Mammoth in winter, over Donner and then south on US-395.
Some of those resorts depend on a second road that can fail on its own: Northstar via SR-267 over Brockway Summit, Alpine Meadows via its dead-end access road, and Homewood and Granlibakken via SR-89 along the west shore. Check those too.
Where the chain control checkpoints are
| Direction | Checkpoints |
|---|---|
| Eastbound (Bay Area / Sacramento to Tahoe) | Applegate (Mile 135), Kingvale (Mile 165) |
| Westbound (Tahoe home) | Truckee Scales (Mile 186), Nyack (Mile 174) |
Have chains in the car before Applegate. You cannot buy them at the checkpoint. Installers at major control points charge roughly $30 to $50. Checkpoint locations come from road-condition reporting, not a Caltrans publication, so confirm on QuickMap the morning you travel.
What R1, R2 and R3 mean on I-80
R2 is the one you will actually meet: chains required on passenger cars unless you have all-wheel or four-wheel drive with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. R1 is lighter and R3 rarer, because the road usually closes instead. Even if you are exempt, you must carry chains inside a control area. Full detail in our chain control guide, and what to buy in our snow chains guide.
Why I-80 is usually the better Tahoe road
I-80 is a divided interstate the whole way and gets the highest snow-removal priority. US-50 is two lanes over a higher summit, so a single spun-out car closes it in a way it rarely closes I-80. But big storms close both: in one February system, chain controls and standstill traffic hit I-80 near Truckee and US-50 at Meyers on the same afternoon. Switching routes mid-drive is not a storm strategy. Leaving earlier, or not going, is.
When to leave
- Check the night before and again before you pull out. Controls change fast enough that an evening check is a different answer from a morning one.
- Beat the storm, not the traffic. If a storm is arriving Friday afternoon, leaving Friday morning or waiting until it clears usually beats driving into it.
- Plan the drive home too. Westbound controls at Truckee Scales and Nyack catch people who only checked the morning forecast.

I-80 to Tahoe: frequently asked questions
Is there chain control on I-80 right now?
Check Caltrans QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov, look up highway 80 at roads.dot.ca.gov, or call 1-800-427-7623. Controls change through the day as storms move, so check again right before you leave.
Where are the chain control checkpoints on I-80?
Eastbound, at Applegate (Mile 135) and Kingvale (Mile 165). Westbound, at Truckee Scales (Mile 186) and Nyack (Mile 174). These come from road-condition reporting rather than a Caltrans publication, so confirm on QuickMap.
Is I-80 or US-50 better to Tahoe in snow?
Usually I-80. It is a divided interstate with the highest snow-removal priority, while US-50 is two lanes over a higher summit. But big storms close both, so the real decision is when to leave, not which road to take.
