About Heavenly

Heavenly Mountain Resort sits on the California-Nevada state line above South Lake Tahoe, and it earns its name. With 3,500 feet of vertical drop — the most of any Lake Tahoe ski resort — and 4,800 skiable acres spread across two states, it's the kind of mountain that takes multiple visits to fully explore. The views of Lake Tahoe from the upper mountain are genuinely stunning, the kind that make you stop mid-run just to take it in.

The California side is accessed via the Heavenly Village gondola, which drops you into the heart of South Lake Tahoe's walkable base village — hotels, restaurants, and the gondola all within a few blocks. The Nevada side has its own base areas at Boulder and Stagecoach, with more open above-treeline terrain and longer cruisers that feel completely different from the tree-dense California side.

Heavenly is part of the Epic Pass, which makes it one of the most accessible Tahoe resorts for out-of-state skiers already holding passes. It's also one of the last California resorts to close each spring — a key reason it consistently draws strong late-season crowds when other mountains have already shut down.

Terrain Breakdown

Heavenly skews heavily intermediate — the majority of accessible terrain is rated blue, making it one of the more intermediate-friendly mountains in Tahoe despite its size and reputation. Terrain percentages vary across sources depending on how acreage vs. trail count is measured, but the consistent picture is: limited beginner terrain (roughly 7–20%), a dominant intermediate core (45–60%), and serious expert terrain in Mott and Killebrew Canyons that punches well above its percentage. The beginner terrain is spread awkwardly across different base areas — worth knowing before bringing first-timers.

Spring Skiing at Heavenly

If you're planning a spring ski trip in California, Heavenly is the first resort that should come to mind. Its high summit elevation (10,067 ft) and large snowmaking infrastructure mean coverage holds longer than most Tahoe mountains. Most years it skis well into April, and in strong snow years it has stretched into late April or even early May.

Spring conditions at Heavenly follow the classic California pattern: firm and fast in the morning, soft and forgiving by midday, and corn snow in the afternoon that's genuinely fun to ski. The Nevada side tends to hold better afternoon conditions since it faces slightly different sun angles. The base village stays lively well into spring — outdoor dining, live music on weekends, and a decidedly end-of-season energy that makes Heavenly spring trips a tradition for a lot of California skiers.

  • Buy tickets in advance. Walk-up window prices at Heavenly are among the highest in Tahoe. Online prices are significantly cheaper, especially midweek.
  • Start on the Nevada side in spring. The Boulder and Stagecoach base areas get you onto higher-elevation terrain faster, and the snow holds firmer longer on that side of the mountain.
  • Park at the gondola. Even if you plan to ski the Nevada side later in the day, the Heavenly Village gondola gives you the best morning access and puts you next to every restaurant and lodge option for lunch.
  • Check the snow report the night before. Spring conditions change fast. A warm night can mean slushy snow by 10am, or a cold snap can leave the groomers icy until noon. The official report is updated each morning.

Heavenly Ski Resort — FAQs

When does Heavenly Ski Resort close for the season?
Heavenly typically closes in mid-April, though in strong snow years it has stayed open into late April or early May. It's one of the last California resorts to close, making it a top destination for spring skiing in Lake Tahoe.
How much vertical drop does Heavenly have?
Heavenly has 2,897 feet of vertical drop, with a summit elevation of 10,067 feet and a base elevation of 7,170 feet. It is one of the larger vertical drops in Lake Tahoe.
Is Heavenly good for beginners?
Heavenly is not the ideal mountain for beginners. Only 7% of terrain is rated green, and the beginner areas are spread across different base areas making navigation tricky. The gondola-accessed Big Easy area is the most beginner-friendly entry point. If you're learning, Northstar or Sierra-at-Tahoe nearby are significantly more beginner-focused.
Where should I stay for a Heavenly ski trip?
South Lake Tahoe has California's largest ski hotel market. The Heavenly Village gondola base is walkable from dozens of hotels. For groups and families, VRBO cabins on the South Shore offer more space at a lower per-person cost than on-mountain lodging.
Does Heavenly have terrain on both California and Nevada?
Yes — Heavenly spans the California-Nevada state line with skiable terrain on both sides. The California side has the gondola base in Heavenly Village. The Nevada side has the Boulder and Stagecoach base areas, with more open above-treeline runs and sweeping views of Lake Tahoe.
