Northstar Ski Resort
Northstar
California
Tahoe's most polished family resort — world-class terrain parks, tree-lined runs that ski well in any weather, and a base village that actually makes the non-skiers in your group happy.
About Northstar California
Northstar sits in the Martis Valley just north of Lake Tahoe, carved out of an old lumber site on the slopes of Mt. Pluto — an extinct volcano that last erupted two million years ago and now has some of the best groomed intermediate runs in Tahoe. The mountain's entirely below the treeline, which is either a pro or a con depending on your priorities: you won't get the sweeping above-treeline views of Palisades or Heavenly, but you also won't get the wind, icy exposure, or visibility issues that shut down the upper mountain at other resorts. On a stormy day in Tahoe, Northstar is often the smartest place to ski.
The base village is genuinely one of the nicest in California skiing. It's pedestrian-only, well-maintained, and designed around the idea that not everyone in your group skis. An outdoor ice rink, complimentary s'mores stations, a proper mix of restaurants, and direct gondola access to the mountain make it work as a full weekend destination even if someone would rather browse shops than hit the slopes. The village condos are expensive but legitimately convenient — you can ski back to your door.
Northstar is an Epic Pass resort, which drives a lot of its weekend traffic. Bay Area families on Epic Passes have made it one of the most consistent-traffic mountains in the Tahoe region. That's great for the resort's infrastructure investment but means popular weekends fill up — Northstar now runs a reservation-based parking system on peak days. If you're driving up on a Saturday in February, plan accordingly.
What Northstar Does Best
Terrain Breakdown
Northstar is an intermediate mountain with an exceptional park system — that's the honest summary. The frontside is dominated by well-groomed blue runs served by high-speed chairs. The backside and Lookout Mountain have steeper terrain that offers real challenge for advanced skiers, but if you're an expert looking for sustained challenge, Palisades Tahoe is a better fit and just a short drive away. What Northstar does better than anyone in Tahoe is serve the 60% of skiers who are intermediate and just want a great, comfortable day on groomed snow.
Planning Your Northstar Trip
The drive from the Bay Area is about 3.5 hours via I-80 to Truckee, then 6 miles south on Highway 267. It's one of the more straightforward Tahoe approaches — no winding mountain road at the end, just a straight shot into the valley. Chain controls on I-80 over Donner Summit are standard in winter. The parking situation is worth thinking through in advance: Northstar charges for weekend parking and requires reservations at peak times, so checking their website before you go saves a headache.
The mountain is fully below treeline, which has a real effect on how it skis. Wind closures that shut down the upper mountain at Heavenly or Palisades essentially don't happen at Northstar — the trees break the wind and visibility stays manageable even in a storm. This makes Northstar a reliable choice when the forecast looks rough and other mountains are a gamble.
- ★It's the right call on a storm day. When other Tahoe resorts are dealing with wind holds and zero visibility, Northstar's tree-protected terrain usually skis fine. Keep it in your back pocket for sketchy weather weekends.
- ★Book parking in advance on peak weekends. Northstar uses a reservation system for its paid lots on busy days. The free Castle Peak lot fills fast — arrive early or pre-book a preferred spot.
- ★The champagne bar is real. Tost at the top of Comstock Express serves complimentary sparkling wine daily at 2pm. It's a genuinely fun mid-ski stop and one of those things that makes Northstar feel different from other mountains.
- ★Lookout Mountain for advanced skiers. If you're above intermediate level and want something more than frontside groomers, Lookout Mountain has the steepest terrain on the mountain with tree runs that hold powder well after a storm.
- ★Stay in Truckee, not the village. Village condos are genuinely convenient but come at a premium. Truckee is 6 miles away with a great historic downtown, lower prices, and better dining options than the resort base.
